new year's eve eve thing to do

Here's a super fun thing to do New Year's Eve eve in NYC.

This from the producer:

Most theatre's are fun.

Theatre's with bars in them are transcendent.

Join us 12/30 for a party that includes a hot new play and a theatrical film made inside an apartment.

Start drinking early:

@ 10PM and 11PM

SNAKESKIN SUIT:
A Play About The Devil
a new play by J. Holtham
directed by Christopher Burris
performed by: William Watkins, Erin Cherry, Jody Christopherson and Andrew Zimmerman

the story: Lily's new boyfriend is funny, charming, more than a little goofy and quite possibly the one. He also happens to be the devil. No, really, Satan. Lucifer. The font of all evil. But he's not really that bad. Or is he? Does he have a diabolical plan for Lily's soul? Or does he just want to win her heart? As she falls deeper and deeper, and her friends get more and more worried about her heart and her immortal soul, Lily has to face her own inner demons...and maybe a few outer ones, too.

Musical Guest: Grace McLean & Them Apples

Run time: 45 minutes

Tickets $15 at the door
or $10 if you show up wearing snake, and show some skin

or Buy in Advance for $10

watch PBS for Sticky alums, tonight

Tonight, catch some Sticky alums in on Channel 13

"LOOKING AT CHRISTMAS"
It's a sweet (and hilariously sour) story of a couple meeting randomly on the streets of NYC to view famous shops' holiday windows. As soon as they are out of sight the windows come to life! I was lucky enough to play multiple roles ranging from an elderly Irish matron to the Virgin Mary (as seen in The New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/28/theater/28banks.html)

It was written by Steven Banks (the head writer of SpongeBob SquarePants), directed by artistic director of The Flea, Jim Simpson, and with a great cast:  Brett Aresco, Crystal Arnette,Allison Buck, Holly Chou, Jack Corcoran, Christian Adam Jacobs, Raúl Sigmund Julia, Betsy Lippitt, Turna Mete, Briana Pozner and John Russo.

It was a play at The Flea Theater that PBS filmed for broadcast.

Money & Theater

There's alot of money in theater: development money, pr money, venue rental money and money for curtain legs and lights, money for sets and costumes, technicians and designers. But artists' salaries? In downtown New York theater there's not so much money for artist's salaries. Writers, actors, and even directors are oft asked to do the thing for love. And they do it (read: I do it), and we do it because we love it, and because we want the chance to make our artwork. You can't make theater all by yourself (okay, people try, like that guy who did a show in his kitchen for a while that I'd link to if I could remember what it was); theater is a collaborative art form, and for the most part, you need an audience. So lots of times, and I'm speaking as a playwright, we work for little or no money.

However, blue box world just did a brand new thing this fall with our Deserted Islands/Deserted Cities project. We paid people. Not all people, we just paid writers. And we didn't pay them much, just $10 each. But we are so happy we were able to do it. We embarked on the project planning to do it, and we did it. We wanted to be able to pay everyone, and someday we will do that, and we will be so happy to do it.

Blue box world does not have development money or grant money. That's now our deal. Instead we fund all of our work on ticket sales alone. And this season we were able to pay writers. Seriously, this is a thrilling thing for us.  If you came out to the show, and helped make this possible, thank you thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, from the bottom of our pockets. We hope you had a great time, we hope you come again.

newspaper project

We've been talking about a new project, something like a themed series ala Deserted Islands/Deserted Cities. It would be the newspaper project, and writers would write plays based on articles from a specific archival newspaper.

We've got a few newspapers already, one from a Mickey Mantle fan, from May 1967, a New York Times from the day President Obama was elected, and on from the day our son Charlie was born on March 7, 2010.

We can post the articles here and people can submit plays too. There are so many stories wanting to be told, and so many different ways to view human progress. It will be exciting to see what people come up with.

end of the season & next

photo of a real live bull fight by Luis Vega
Another season of Sticky is complete. We had lots of fun on deserted islands and deserted cities around the world, but we're ready to get back to the bar.

Upcoming in January, Luis Vega curates some Sticky at Bowery Poetry Club with two plays he's written, and will be performing: Mr Happiness and Matador.

Also it looks like Daliya Karnofsky will be doing an interactive baking show. www.andshebakes.com
