Set in a small American city, I Am
Not an Allegory (these are people i know), confronts sex, faith, and
race from outside the perspective of the educated coastal class. Nine actors step
off the stage and into reality to perform a play that takes place at this exact
moment in your actual life. Outside the rush and tumble and race to the top of
megatropolis America, six women and the men in their lives try to find meaning
in lives that after 30 years, have moved from fantasy to reality.
Libby Emmons plays include Zeropia (Clubbed Thumb Biennial Commission), The Girls from Afar (Desipina & Co., East West Players, Open
Rehearsal at INTAR, finalist Yale Drama Series), The Little Room (finalist Eugene O'Neill Conference, BBC
International Radio Play Competition), and RU610
(Williamstown Theater Festival commission), among others. She is curator of the
Sticky series, and resident
playwright at Blue Box World. Libby and director Ali Ayala have worked together
on the Sticky series, and other projects of Blue Box World, since 2003. Ali
Ayala is the resident director at Blue Box World, and recently directed Eschaton Cabaret at the Bowery Poetry
Club.
The cast of six women and three men have all
been part of the Sticky series, and
includes: Matthew Murumba (Death in Mozambique, Cherry Lane),
Havilah Brewster (RadioPlay with
Reggie Watts), Race Brown (Another Bank
Robbery, Delaware Opera Co.), Dan Cozzens (The Tenant, Woodshed Collective), Anna Lamadrid (Enfrascada, Clubbed Thumb), Eve Udesky (Uncle Vanya, Boomerang Theater Co.),
Lindsay Torrey (Alice or the Scottish
Gravediggers, Polybe + Seats), Ali Ayala (Sticky, Blue Box World), and David Marcus (Artfuckers, Theater for the New City).
Blue Box World is a New York City based theater
project whose signature show Sticky
has run for 9 years. In that time Sticky has premiered plays from Adam
Szymkowicz, Tommy Smith, Rehana Mirza, Adam Rapp, Libby Emmons, Jon Kern, Clay
McCloud Chapman and over 100 others. As an unsubsidized theater project, Blue
Box World has eschewed the exorbitant costs of theater making, while
maintaining the highest artistic standards. This mini run of I Am
Not an Allegory (these are people i know) marks the beginning of a
new way of producing full length work.
